You should ignore most advice.
I don’t always ignore advice from someone who’s been through what I’m going through and have come out the other end better off.
Sometimes I’d take their advice if they come out the other end worse off.
I don’t always ignore advice from someone who is in a position that I aspire to.
But I certainly ignore advice from those who aren’t where I want to be. Who haven’t been through what I’m going through and who aren’t in a position that I aspire to.
If the person giving you advice isn’t a credible source. If they haven’t been through what you’re going through. If they haven’t done what you’re trying to do, then that’s not advice. That’s an opinion.
Everyone is entitled to theirs, that’s fine, but just because you have one, that doesn’t mean I should entertain it.
Even those who are where I want to be or who’ve been through what I’m going through, that doesn’t mean I’ll take their advice at face value.
They’re different. Their personality is different. The people involved are different. The time is different.
Even someone speaking from experience who’s been through what you’re going through can still get it wrong. They can still be talking about how it was back then. Or how they did it. They can still have gotten lucky and attributed their success to skill. They will still have gone about things in their way, with their personality.
Before you act on advice, just consider where it’s coming from.
