The difference between rap and golf

May 30, 2024 by Kane Simms

For those that don’t know, I used to be a wannabe rapper. A Wapper, if you like. It seems I wasn’t quite good enough to make it but every now and then I like to see if I’ve still got it.

The thing about rap is that it’s a bit of a selfish game. Very ego-driven. While that gives us some epic diss tracks (Hit ‘em Up, anyone?), it also leads to a bit of an ‘us vs them’ mentality where there’s only room for one at the top.

I swapped the mic chord for a golf club in my twenties and, while both ‘sports’ are similar in the fact that they’re solo efforts, but golf is far more communal.

No matter who you’re playing with, you want them to do well, rather than fail. Their performance has no bearing on your performance whatsoever. The whole culture is one of support and encouragement. It’s an infinite mentality where you’re only competing against yourself.

While rap is cool for the moment, it’s better to have a golfers mentality in the long run.

Now, who’s for a round?
