Remember when you used to get a new phone and the only thing you had to transfer was your phone numbers?
I remember having to write down all my contact’s numbers, then having to manually type and save them into my new phone.
These days, it’s much more complex. I experienced a few ups and downs after upgrading my phone.
I recently had a problem with my iPhone 4S. The battery just wouldn’t charge, at all. After taking it to the Apple shop, I returned home with a new phone and set about uploading my backup onto my new device.
Upon plugging it in, I noticed that the most recent backup I had stored was from 13th January 2012, 10 month ago!
After apparently restoring my phone back to its previous state and noticing that it seemed to have been transported back in time, I shit myself. Where are my messages? My photos? My apps? My notes? My reading list? My bookmarks? Where are my remembered passwords to my bank, PayPal, eBay, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Ladbrokes, Blippar, Pinterest, Yelp, VoucherCloud, Groupon, Foursquare, YouTube, Google Plus, Amazon?
I also remember the last time I formatted my computer. A whole weekend it took me to reinstall all the programmes, software ect – your whole life was stored on there.
Now, your whole life is stored on your phone, more information than you think. I decided to restore my phone and see what would happen if I restore from the cloud.
Low and behold. All of my apps came flooding back. As did my reading list, my notes, the lot.
This weekend has made me realise how much we rely on our phones- no wonder we feel lost without it – we are no longer us without it.
We can’t think without Google. We can’t sit without checking Facebook. Even when we are doing nothing, were on our phones doing something. Even when watching telly or having a conversation. The thing is, the more advanced phones get, the more information we’ll store on them and the more our lives will depend on them, much like the desktop computer.
What business on this earth could function without a desktop computer? What person on earth will be able to function without a smartphone?
